 The Manchester's Summer Picnic

August 19, 2006

Notes by Patti Wilder

The RJC board felt that an Appreciation Dinner for all of the RJC members was long over due.  For over 20+ years RJC members have helped each other with car problems and solutions, opened their homes for get togethers, taken time out of their busy schedules to host tech sessions and organize cruises and events, and much, much more.  It was therefore decided that a “FREE” special dinner was in order to thank everyone for all of their efforts through the years.  The Manchester’s graciously opened their home for us and live music was agreed upon.

The RJC Appreciate Dinner was something all the organizers of this event can be proud of.  Even the “Man up stairs” cooperated and gave us perfect weather.  Not too hot, not too cold and no major wind!  The setting at the Manchester’s was picture perfect and the food was plentiful and delicious.  All of this was set to music by our guest singer, Richard Elloyan.

There were over 50 people in attendance.  Carolyn and Charlie really out did themselves.  It was obvious that they have hosted a party or two before.  They were so organized.  They had different game stations set up around the yard where everyone was encourage to play.  The games were: Fan Belt Toss, Darts, Croquette and Horseshoes.  There were prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each event.  There was also the “Reno Jaguar Club August Event People’s Choice Car Show”.  The attending members voted for their favorite cars.  The nine classes and winners are as follows:

Class 1 - Whose Pre 1970 Saloon describes Grace, Space and Pace?

* A special prize was given to “Willow”.  Mike & Kathy Glass had to forfeit bringing their car “Willow” to this event because they needed to bring their truck to haul the food for the party.  Willow would have given other cars a run for their money.

Mike and Kathy Glass organized and brought the catered part of this meal.  B.J.’s Barbeque prepared the ribs, beans, rice and cornbread.  The Board members; the Glasses, Mindew’s, Keast’s, Dyer’s and Wilder’s brought the side dishes.  Many people have asked for these recipes so it was discussed that maybe we should put together a “RJC Cookbook”.  This would be useful around our kitchens and would make excellent gift for family and friends.

As everyone ate their meals, Richard Elloyan, an accompliced singer, sang for us.  He is a cowboy poet and songwriter.  He relates in his music true Nevada pride.  He has four CD’s published and is working on his 5th.  His website is: http://richardelloyan.com/ .

The Meeting part of the Dinner/meeting was held to the minimum.  The topics discussed were:

  • The RJC Wine Tour – Patti suggested the date of October 14, 2006 for this event.  The reason for this date were:

1.  Cooler weather

2.  This would be Jesse’s Grove Winery’s last concert of the year.  Last year this was the last stop and highlight of the wine tour.

3.  An October event would not be in competition with all of Reno’s September activities: Air Races, Balloon Races etc.  Hopefully this will allow for more RJC members to participate in this event.

  • Garage Sale – A RJC garage sale was proposed at the last dinner meeting.  This should generate quite a bit of money to the RJC account and it will be a great way to advertise the Reno Jaguar Club.  It will let locals know that there is a JAGUAR CLUB in the area!  A date was needed to finalize this.  It is now going to be on September 23, 2006 at Gary & Kathy Dyer’s medical building parking lot on Kirman.  Details are forth coming.  Be sure to START SAVING items for this garage sale.  Car parts and household goods, clothing etc are welcome.

  • Mike Glass proposed a Progressive Dinner in September but Kathy Dyer countered with just an impromptu lunch after the garage sale.  A vote was taken by attending members and the later was chosen.

  • Mike Glass also mentioned that there would be a Car Cruise to Volcano, California in October.  It was such a hit last year he wants to do this again.
A date will be announced at a later date.

  • Dave Minedew distributed the RJC Business Cards that he had printed.  Members can now use these cards to introduce themselves to prospective RJC members.  Members are to write in their own phone numbers and/or addresses on these cards.

  • Gary Dyer fielded answers in regard to the “memory test” regarding our drive up Highway 50 and the trivia question that was on the bottom of the dinner invitation.  Jack Campbell won the $10.00 trivia prize.

Again a HUGE "Thank You" goes out to all of the organizers of this event.  You know who you are!

P.S. Has anyone found Cynthia Kelly’s sunglasses.  They were lost at the July dinner/meeting at the Browning’s home.  The brand name on the glasses is “CAZAL” Please notify Cynthia or Patti if found. Thanks.
