Gold Dust West
Carson City
It was a hot, dry July evening when the club gathered at the Gold Dust
West Casino in Carson City for our monthly dinner meeting. Rex and
Dixie Black welcomed us into the cool and refreshing air of the
meeting room set up just for us. They has thoughtfully arranged
special parking for our cars adjacent to the entrance to the meeting
room, which was very convenient! After a relaxing time of
socializing, partaking of the no-host bar, and catching up; the 28,
or so, of us settled down to a delicious meal. The property owner (I
believe) visited each table and I heard everyone tell her how much
they enjoyed their meal. I can say that the chicken cordon bleu was
among the best I have tasted.
Our Acting President, Patti, opened the meeting from behind a
microphone-equipped podium, which was draped with the American flag.
She read a message from our absent President, George, sending
greetings and good wishes. He and Marje are busy working on their
home in Tulsa. He has met up with the Tulsa Jag Club and attended a
"Euro Car" weekend, and an SCCA slalom event. They will return to
Reno in about a month.
Our newest member, Kerry Yamamoto was introduced and welcomed. We are
looking forward to getting to know him and seeing his XK 120.
Patti then announced that Dixie has "craftily" made numerous items to
be sold to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and has generously
offered 25% of the proceeds from this evening's sale to the Club
treasury. There were knitted/crocheted scarves, clever wine bottle
gift bags, a traveling curling iron caddy, and Baked Potato Bags,
which do much more than the name implies. Thank you so much, Dixie,
for sharing these unique and useful items with us; and for the time
and effort you have put into them!
Patti thanked Tony Fakonas and Mike Johnson who organized the June 12,
Tech Session, and to Gary and Kathy Dyer who hosted in their garage.
The 13 members attending had a good hands-on session, while Mike
explained the virtues and perils of SU and Stromberg Constant vacuum
carburetors. Mike's gas analyzer was used by several members to check
their engine tuning. Once again, an enormous "thank you!" to the
Dyers for sharing their beautiful space.
The June 26 Jag caravan to Big Springs Gardens near Sierra City, CA,
was cited as a successful and fun day with 22 members and 10 cars. We
were able to stay together most of the way, and represented each
decade starting with Charlie and Carolyn's '66 Mark II. Thanks went
out to Sunny and Dave for organizing this event. Picture are on the
web-site.
Old/Ongoing Business:
Email communication continues with the Sacramento Jag Club. Patti has
been in contact with Natalie Olson there, and suggested meeting at the
Ironstone Concours, September 25. Patti and Natalie are exploring
the logistics of set up at the event. Natalie mentioned that
September 2010 is the 75th anniversary of the Jaguar automobile; she
is surprised that the marque is not being featured in the Concours.
Member input included: Terry Mitchell said that when she and Tony
attended, the featured anniversary marque was Pierce Arrow. Hart
stated that he has attended Ironstone previously. Iain said he has
written to the contact on the Concours web-site to inquire about the
automobile categories. . . at this writing, he has again inquired and
received a response: the Ironstone Concours will include a class for
Jaguar cars; 1971 and earlier, except E-types to the last year of
production, 1974.. . yeah!
Patti continues to sell our RJC badges on eBay. There is a collector
"of all things Jaguar"; George Keller, a member of the Central Ohio
Jag Club. His collection is featured in the June edition of the
Jaguar Journal, and, on page 39, our very own RJC badge is mentioned
as being part of his collection. A lapel bin has been sent to a
purchaser in Bend OR.
We are still looking for ideas for a venue for a slalom event, that is
not too expensive. Several members favored sites in Stead; others
liked the Mount Rose parking area, but cost is an issue.
We are encouraged to attend the Harrah's National Automobile Museum
Adopt-a-Car Wax and Shine party, Thursday July 15 5:30 to 8:30 pm.
The Club's adopted car is an aluminum-body 120 XK.
The Day On The Village Green event venue continues to be discussed.
Sites under consideration: Club Cal Neva at Stateline, Rancho San
Rafael Park, Bartley Ranch, Squaw Valley. Also, suggested by Sam: an
indoor venue for the protection of the cars and comfort of the humans.
There being no further Old or New Business, the meeting was adjourned.
The Manchesters announced their annual summer picnic at their home
will be the first or second weekend in August. Details to follow.
The next monthly dinner meeting, hosted by Tony and Terry Mitchell
will be at the Lakeridge Golf Course 19th Hole.
Other Member news and brags were shared: Rex and Dixie's grandson, a
professional baseball player, has been drafted by the Florida Marlins.
He will play second base for them. Sam and Mina announced that one
of their daughters has qualified for the Boston Marathon. Iain and
Wendy shared that their son, Noah, has been selected to Law Review at
USD Law School. Joan proudly announced that she was allowed to move
the new Jag out of the garage...successfully!
Finally, we need to make a "housekeeping" note here: Our meeting
hosts are asked to provide an accurate head count in advance of the
dinners. If you have responded as attending, and find that you
cannot, please be sure to contact the club member who is hosting at
least 24 hours in advance; otherwise, "no shows" will be expected to pay
for their dinners.
